Definition of a Guild Lodge

A Lodge is the building where stonemasons work or meet but also refers to any place where a number of stonemasons are gathered.

Lodge meetings serve two purposes;

(1) Education. Meetings chaired by Master or member of the Board of Masters.

(2) Corporatist Unionism. Meetings chaired by the Maire/Gáhir of the Lodge acting as shop steward regarding the welfare of members.

Both meetings are traditionally radical and non-conformist where free speech is at the heart of proceedings. Linked to early trades unions, London working men's association and the Chartist movement.

Lodge motto:

Firmness, Kindness, Compassion
